The Muliaage,     The maldives

Solar Head of State worked with President Mohamed Nasheed to install solar panels on the Muliaage, the Official Presidential Residence of the Maldives.

At that time, President Nasheed understood the need to lead with action, and worked to promote renewable energy in one of the countries that stand to lose most from climate change. A chain of atolls, the Maldives lie just a few feet above sea level, and the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami brought home the dangers faced by the rising tides. The country's very existence is threatened by rising sea levels, and President Nasheed famously held an underwater cabinet meeting to draw attention to the risks faced by his country.

Although the Maldives' carbon emissions are negligible on a global scale, under President Nasheed they were the first nation to come in with an aggressive proposal - 100% carbon neutral by 2020. The 11.5kW system on the Muliaage will save 200 tons of carbon in its lifetime and save the government roughly US$300,000. By being the first world leader to install a solar PV system on an executive residence, the Maldives leads the way for a solar future.
