Mohamed Nasheed

Environmental Activist, Former President of the Maldives

Veteran Human Rights Campaigner, Environmental Activist, and the first democratically elected President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed is a highly respected and admired world leader. Facing endemic corruption, imprisonment, and torture, President Nasheed led his party, the Maldivian Democratic Party, to victory in the country’s most important election in its history. In 2010, Nasheed became the world’s first Solar Head of State by installing a 14kW solar power system on the country’s executive residence. After being forced out of government by a military coup backed by the former dictator, President Nasheed continues to fight for human rights, democracy and the environment in the Maldives and around the world.
